The Hidden Connection Between Social Media Platforms and the Adult Industry

The mainstream social media platform in your hand is not just adjacent to the adult industry. In many cases, it is invested in it, profiting from it, and structured around it. The connections are not hidden in the shadows. They are filed in public records, reported in financial news, and confirmed by the companies themselves.

The average user never sees this. The average user sees a platform that claims to ban adult content. The average user sees a platform that says it prioritises safety. The average user has no idea that the same financial networks and corporate structures that profit from social media also profit from the adult content industry.

This is not a conspiracy theory. It is corporate reality. And understanding it changes how you see the platforms you use every day.

The OnlyFans Ownership and Investment Network

OnlyFans is the most visible adult content platform in the world. Its ownership and investment structure reveals exactly how the adult industry and mainstream financial networks intersect.

In May 2026, OnlyFans agreed to sell a 16 percent stake to San Francisco-based Architect Capital in a deal that valued the company at about $3.15 billion. The stake was purchased for $535 million.

Architect Capital is not a fringe investor. It was founded in 2020 and provides asset-backed loans to technology companies. It operates within the mainstream venture capital ecosystem.

The investors behind the Architect Capital special purpose vehicle include James Packer, one of Australia’s wealthiest individuals. Packer is the son of media mogul Kerry Packer and has been an active technology investor, trading stocks in companies like Nvidia, Meta, Amazon, and TSMC.

Sam Lessin, a partner at venture capital firm Slow Ventures and an early Facebook employee, is also involved in the investment. Lessin was one of the earliest investors in Venmo.

These are not people operating on the margins of the tech industry. They are embedded in it. The same networks that fund social media companies also fund the adult content platforms.

The ownership structure of OnlyFans itself is equally revealing. The company is operated by UK-based Fenix International Ltd. After the death of owner Leonid Radvinsky in March 2026, his widow Yekaterina Chudnovsky took control of at least 75 percent of Fenix’s shares and voting rights.

Radvinsky had purchased a 75 percent stake in Fenix from founder Tim Stokely in 2018 for $30 million. He then reoriented the company toward adult content and saw it explode during the pandemic.

OnlyFans generated approximately $1.5 billion in revenue and over $700 million in profit last year. The platform processes $7.2 billion in gross transactions and hosts 4.6 million creator accounts. It takes a 20 percent cut of creators’ earnings.

Radvinsky’s earnings from OnlyFans were almost entirely paid to him as dividends, totaling nearly $1.8 billion over four years.

This is not a small operation. It is a multi-billion dollar business integrated into the same financial systems that fund mainstream technology.

The TikTok Livestream Profit Machine

The connection between social media and the adult industry is not just about investment. It is about direct profit from sexual content.

A BBC investigation into TikTok revealed that the platform takes a cut of approximately 70 percent from all livestream transactions. This includes livestreams where minors as young as fifteen were performing sexual acts for payment.

The investigation found that girls in Kenya were using TikTok to advertise and negotiate payment for explicit content sent via other messaging platforms. They used coded language to avoid detection. “Kinembe” is Swahili for clitoris. “Inbox me” instructs viewers to send private messages with more explicit requests.

The emoji gifts act as payment. They can be converted into cash. TikTok takes its 70 percent cut.

A former TikTok moderator told the BBC that it is not in TikTok’s interest to clamp down on soliciting of sex because the more people give gifts on a livestream, the more revenue for TikTok.

Another moderator explained that the reference guide of banned sexual words and actions is restrictive and does not take into account slang or provocative gestures. “You can see by the way they are posing, with the camera on their cleavage and thighs, that they are soliciting sex,” the moderator said. “They may not say anything, but you can see they are signposting to their [other platform] account, but there’s nothing I can do.”

TikTok has long been aware of child exploitation in its livestreams, having run its own internal investigation in 2022, but ignored the issue because it “profited significantly” from them, according to claims in a lawsuit brought by the US state of Utah.

The platform denied the allegations in the lawsuit, stating it ignored the “proactive measures” it had taken to improve safety.

The “Sexfluencer” Pipeline

The connection is not just about platforms hosting content. It is about platforms creating the pipeline that leads users into the adult industry.

Sex workers are using mainstream platforms to build audiences and cross-promote their explicit content. They call themselves “bops,” “mattress actresses,” or “spicy content creators” to avoid moderators flagging their content as inappropriate.

Their viral social media videos feature girls typically between the ages of 18 and 22 dancing to TikTok trends made popular by teenagers and modelling a life of luxury. The popular lifestyle content is not inherently harmful, but some sex workers are calling out the lack of transparency in large amounts of viral social media content being targeted at young women.

One 19-year-old woman told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that she was “freshly 18” when she decided to start modelling on OnlyFans. “I think I was very influenced by other creators who were already doing it,” she said.

A sex worker with over 2 million TikTok followers said she stopped making money-counting videos despite the millions of views because she was worried a younger audience would see that and not really know what she had to do to get that money. “They might think, ‘Oh she makes so much money on OnlyFans, or so much money as a sex worker, I should do that too.'”

A study published in the journal Sexuality & Culture found that children as young as 12 now view “erotic content creation” on platforms such as OnlyFans as a “desirable” career choice, believing this to be an accessible source of income and a form of empowerment. What these children do not realise, the journal states, is that these platforms actually “reinforce sexist” structures.

The platforms profit from this pipeline. They profit from the engagement the content generates. They profit from the users who are inspired to create their own content. The pipeline feeds the adult industry, and the adult industry feeds the platforms.

The Ad Tech Connection

The connection extends to the advertising technology that funds the entire internet ecosystem.

A BBC investigation found that Google, Amazon, and Microsoft served ads on a website hosting child sexual abuse material. The site, ImgBB, allowed people to upload photos anonymously without creating an account and provided settings that hide images from search engines, features that are perfect for criminal activity.

Since 2021, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children sent ImgBB 27 notifications about child sexual abuse material on the platform.

Industry insiders said the site should have been blocked from advertising systems far in advance. A former executive at both Google and Meta said, “Anyone who spent any time looking at this site would have eliminated it [from their ad network inventories].”

A computer science professor who studies the digital economy said, “No one is more responsible for this than Google. Sure, this stuff might be hard to fix. This is merely an engineering problem, the kind of problem they solve every day. Google should be held accountable. This is harming our society.”

The same ad systems that fund legitimate publishers also fund sites hosting illegal content. The platforms do not distinguish. They optimise for revenue. The content that drives engagement, whatever it is, gets monetised.

The “Cross-Platform Dependency by Design”

Academic research reveals how the adult industry and social media are structurally intertwined.

A study of 27 OnlyFans adult content creators found that success on OnlyFans depends on the creators’ ability to strategically promote themselves across multiple social media channels. The researchers describe this as “cross-platform dependency by design.”

The creators have to adapt their self-presentation to the specificity of each platform they adopt, navigating different moderation policies, engaging distinct imagined audiences, and developing platform-specific branding strategies. They face continuous challenges due to unpredictable content moderation and platform policies.

The research concludes that due to the importance of content visibility and self-promotion for monetisation, OnlyFans-based sex work becomes “inflated with and conflated with cross-platform self-branding.” The public image of OnlyFans work as “easy money” is starkly contrasted with the reality of constant promotion, platform navigation, and moderation risk.

This dependency means that mainstream social media platforms are not just adjacent to the adult industry. They are a structural component of it. The adult industry cannot function without them. The platforms profit from that function.

What the Platforms Say

The platforms deny the connection. They point to policies against adult content. They highlight moderation efforts. They express commitment to safety.

The reality contradicts the claims. The financial records show the investments. The investigations show the profits. The research shows the dependency. The platforms profit from the pipeline while publicly distancing themselves from it.

OnlyFans itself describes its platform as being “home to a wide range of content creators including comedians, athletes, fashion designers, music artists, celebrities and adult content creators.” Adult creators appear last on the company’s list, despite being the category for which OnlyFans is best known.

The company’s CEO has argued that the platform is “feminist.” The reality, as documented by researchers and former creators, is more complicated. The financial incentives, the structural dependencies, and the documented harms tell a different story.

The Hard Truth

The connection between social media platforms and the adult industry is not hidden. It is in the financial filings. It is in the investment records. It is in the investigations. It is in the academic research.

The platforms profit from the adult industry through direct revenue from sexual content, through investment in adult platforms, through ad tech systems that monetise all content regardless of legality or harm, and through the structural dependency that makes mainstream platforms essential for adult content creators to reach audiences.

The average user is not told this. The average user sees the public policies and believes them. The average user does not know that the same networks that own and fund social media also own and fund the adult industry.

Words of Wisdom

Follow the money. The money tells the truth that the press releases hide. The investments reveal the priorities that the policies obscure. The revenue streams show what the platforms actually value, regardless of what they say.

The platforms will tell you they are fighting against exploitation. The financial records will tell you they are profiting from it. Believe the financial records.

The ModafVibe Alternative

ModafVibe is a social media platform built on a different foundation.

We do not serve as a recruitment ground for the adult industry. We do not allow adult content. Zero. None. Not explicit, not suggestive, not disguised. There is nothing on our platform that can be used to feed the pipeline.

We do not have investors who profit from the adult industry. We do not have ownership connections to adult platforms. We do not structure our business around the exploitation of human bodies.

We built ModafVibe because the mainstream platforms have made their choice. They chose engagement over protection. They chose revenue over dignity. We chose differently.

Join ModafVibe. A social media platform where the connections are clean. Where the business model does not depend on exploitation. Where dignity is not negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do social media platforms really invest in the adult industry?

Yes. The ownership and investment structures of platforms like OnlyFans include mainstream investors who are also embedded in the technology and venture capital ecosystems. James Packer and Sam Lessin, both connected to mainstream tech and media, were involved in the Architect Capital investment in OnlyFans.

Does TikTok really profit from sexual livestreams involving minors?

The BBC investigation found that TikTok takes approximately 70 percent of livestream transactions, including those where minors were performing sexual acts. A former moderator said it is not in TikTok’s interest to clamp down because the gifts generate revenue for the platform.

Why don’t platforms stop the pipeline?

Because the pipeline is profitable. The engagement from sexual content drives revenue. The investment connections create financial incentives. The structural dependency means the adult industry and social media are intertwined. Stopping the pipeline would reduce revenue and damage investment relationships.

What can I do to avoid supporting this system?

Do not engage with adult content on social media. Do not click, share, or subscribe. Choose platforms that do not profit from exploitation. ModafVibe is a social media platform built on a different foundation.

The Choice

The connections are real. The profits are documented. The exploitation is structural. You cannot unsee what you now know.

You cannot change the platforms. You can change where you spend your attention. You can choose platforms that do not profit from the pipeline.

ModafVibe is that choice. A social media platform without adult content. Without investment ties to exploitation. Without the structural dependencies that feed the industry.

Choose differently. Choose safety. Choose ModafVibe.
