How Predators Use Social Media Adult Content to Groom Children

The messages start innocently. A friend request from someone who shares the same interests. A comment on a post about a favourite game. A direct message complimenting a drawing or a photo. The child responds. The predator now has a foot in the door.

This is not a rare occurrence. It is happening on every major social media platform, every day. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported over 518,000 cases of online enticement in just the first half of 2025, up from 292,000 in the same period the year before. The numbers are climbing because the tactics are working. And the platforms that host these interactions are not stopping them.

The Grooming Process

Online grooming is not a single event. It is a process. An adult uses electronic communication in a predatory fashion to lower a child’s inhibitions, heighten their curiosity about sex, and eventually manipulate them into sexual activity. The process is gradual. Each step is small. Each step feels normal to the child.

The first stage is trust building. The predator presents as friendly, understanding, and interested in what the child cares about. They compliment the child’s appearance or talent. They offer emotional support. They become the person the child feels safe talking to.

The second stage is isolation. The predator encourages the child to keep the relationship secret. “Your parents wouldn’t understand.” “This is our special friendship.” The secrecy creates a barrier between the child and the adults who could protect them.

The third stage is sexualization. This is where adult content enters the process. The predator sends pornographic images to “normalize” the discussion of sexual activities. The content is framed as something mature, something special, something that proves the child is trusted. The child is exposed to explicit material not through their own search, but through someone they have come to trust.

The fourth stage is escalation. Once the child is desensitized to sexual content, the predator moves to requests. Naked images. Sexual acts on webcam. The requests are presented as natural extensions of the relationship. The child, now confused and afraid of losing the connection, often complies.

Why Adult Content Is the Weapon

Adult content is not incidental to grooming. It is the tool.

Research on online grooming strategies shows that offenders use pornographic material to create a sense of normality around sexual activity. The child is shown what “everyone does.” The child is told this is what mature people do. The content serves as proof that the predator’s requests are not unusual or wrong.

The content also desensitizes. A child exposed to explicit material repeatedly becomes less shocked by it. The initial discomfort fades. The predator’s subsequent requests seem less extreme by comparison. The escalation feels natural because the baseline has shifted.

Perhaps most disturbingly, the content creates a reciprocal obligation. The predator gives the child something. The child feels they owe something in return. Research on grooming tactics found that gift-giving and monetary exchange were used to create a sense of obligation, with victims made to feel they must reciprocate. The adult content is a gift. The child feels pressured to repay it.

The Platforms Are the Hunting Ground

Predators do not need to search dark corners of the internet to find children. They go where children are.

UNICEF research across 21 countries found that nearly 60 percent of technology-facilitated sexual abuse cases occurred on mainstream social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and WhatsApp. These are the platforms parents know. These are the apps children use to talk to friends. These are not hidden sites that require special access. They are the digital spaces where children learn, play, and connect.

The platforms’ own features facilitate the abuse. Direct messaging allows private communication. Fake accounts allow predators to present any identity they choose. Algorithmic recommendations can connect adults to children based on shared interests. The features that make the platforms engaging are the same features that make them dangerous.

In Montenegro, more than 80 percent of reported cases of technology-facilitated sexual abuse involved social media platforms. In Colombia, it was more than half. The pattern is global. The platforms are not failing to prevent abuse. They are providing the infrastructure for it.

The “Hormonal Groups” Pipeline

A recent investigation revealed a specific pipeline predators use to lure minors into sexual content sharing on encrypted platforms.

TikTok accounts promote “hormonal groups” through simple videos and QR codes. The comments on these videos are filled with teenagers openly declaring their ages. “I’m 14.” “I’m 15.” “Under 14.” The accounts serve as a storefront, funnelling minors into WhatsApp and Telegram groups where explicit content is shared.

Once inside the groups, users are required to introduce themselves with a photo, age, and country. They are told they must “contribute” content or be removed. The administrators, often adults, claim that members’ ages range from “around 15 and up” but also admit that “there are minors and us bastards that are twice their age.”

The content shared in these groups includes sexually explicit videos and images. Some appear to be shared without consent. The groups operate in the open, promoted through mainstream platforms, while the actual abuse happens in private encrypted chats where platforms cannot see.

The Warning Signs Parents Miss

Grooming is designed to be invisible to adults. The predator builds trust with the child, not the parent. The child is made to feel the relationship is special and secret. The signs are there, but they are easy to miss if you do not know what to look for.

Unexplained gifts or money. New devices the parent did not buy. Sudden secrecy about online activity. Using the phone late at night or waking to use it. Quickly closing screens when an adult approaches.

Emotional changes. Withdrawal from family activities. Irritability, anxiety, or depression. Fear of losing phone or internet access. Strong attachment to an online “friend” they will not let you contact.

Sexualized language or knowledge beyond their age. Possession of explicit images. Use of coded language, emojis, or acronyms. Pressure to move conversations to private or encrypted apps.

The most dangerous sign is a child who expresses fear about “getting in trouble” if someone finds out about their online interactions. This fear is the predator’s greatest tool. It keeps the child silent. The silence allows the abuse to continue.

The Hard Truth

The platforms know this is happening. They have the data. They have the reports. They have the resources to implement stronger protections. They choose not to because strong protection means fewer users, less engagement, and less revenue.

UNICEF’s report calls for platforms to implement “safety by design” including stronger privacy protections for children, restrictions on unsolicited contact from adults, and safer recommender systems. These are not technological impossibilities. They are choices. The platforms are choosing engagement over protection. They are choosing revenue over children.

The predators know the platforms will not stop them. That is why they operate so openly. That is why the “hormonal groups” are promoted on TikTok without consequence. That is why fake accounts proliferate. The platforms have created an environment where predators can hunt with minimal risk.

Words of Wisdom

A child’s trust is the most precious thing they have. It is also the easiest thing to exploit. The predator does not break the trust. They borrow it. They borrow it slowly, carefully, one conversation at a time. By the time the child realises what has happened, the trust has become a trap.

If you are a parent, your child’s safety is not a responsibility you can delegate to a platform. The platforms have proven they will not protect. The protection must come from you. From awareness. From conversation. From a relationship where your child feels safe telling you anything, even the things that feel shameful or wrong.

The conversation is uncomfortable. The warning signs are disturbing. But silence is not safety. Silence is exactly what the predator needs.

The ModafVibe Alternative

ModafVibe is a social media platform built because children deserve better than being hunted.

We do not allow adult content. Zero. None. Not explicit, not suggestive, not disguised. There is nothing on our platform that can be used to normalize sexual content to a child.

We do not allow adults to contact minors without restriction. Our platform is designed to prevent the unsolicited contact that grooming requires. We do not provide the infrastructure for predators to operate.

We built ModafVibe because the mainstream platforms have made their choice. They chose engagement over protection. We chose differently. We built a social media platform where children can connect without being hunted.

Join ModafVibe. A social media platform where safety is not a feature. It is the foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can grooming happen on any platform?

Yes. Any platform that allows communication between users can be used for grooming. Platforms popular with young people are particularly targeted because that is where the victims are.

What should I do if I suspect my child is being groomed?

Do not panic. Do not immediately confiscate devices, as this may drive the relationship further underground. Stay calm. Listen to your child. Seek help from law enforcement and child protection organizations. Report the account to the platform.

How can I protect my child from grooming?
