Some are global favourites that everyone uses. Others are local solutions built for specific Nigerian needs. Together, the apps on our phones tell an interesting story about how we communicate, work, spend money, and entertain ourselves.

I looked at download trends, Play Store rankings, and conversations across social media to identify the apps that Nigerians have been downloading most heavily this year. This is not a list of the best apps. It is a list of the apps that are actually dominating Nigerian phones right now.

TikTok

TikTok is not slowing down. If anything, it is accelerating. More Nigerians are spending more time on TikTok than ever before. The app has become the default entertainment platform for young Nigerians, replacing hours that used to go to television and even YouTube.

What keeps TikTok growing is the algorithm. It learns what you like quickly and serves content that holds your attention. Nigerian creators are thriving on the platform, producing comedy, educational content, tech reviews, and lifestyle videos that attract massive local audiences.

Businesses have noticed too. Small Nigerian brands now use TikTok as their primary marketing channel. The reach is better than Instagram and the cost is lower than running traditional ads. This commercial adoption is driving even more downloads as entrepreneurs join the platform.

TikTok Shop is also growing in Nigeria, though slowly. The ability to sell products directly through the app is attracting small business owners who previously relied solely on WhatsApp and Instagram.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp remains the backbone of Nigerian digital communication. It is not exciting or new, but it is essential. Almost every Nigerian with a smartphone has WhatsApp installed. It is the first app many people check in the morning and the last one they check at night.

WhatsApp Channels, which launched last year, has given the app new relevance. Creators, news outlets, religious organizations, and businesses now broadcast updates to large audiences through Channels. This feature has kept WhatsApp competitive even as newer messaging apps emerge.

WhatsApp Business is also widely downloaded by small business owners. The ability to create a business profile, catalogue products, and respond to customers automatically has made it a crucial commerce tool.

Communities and group chats remain the centre of Nigerian social life. Family groups, work groups, church groups, alumni groups. The network effect is so strong that leaving WhatsApp feels impossible for most Nigerians.

Opay and PalmPay

Mobile money and fintech apps continue to dominate Nigerian downloads. Opay and PalmPay are leading this category based on download numbers and active usage.

Both apps offer mobile wallets, money transfers, bill payments, and savings features. Their growth has been fuelled by agent networks. Opay and PalmPay agents are everywhere in Nigerian cities, helping people deposit and withdraw cash. This physical presence builds trust and drives app downloads.

The user interfaces are simple and designed for people who may not be tech-savvy. Sending money to a phone number feels as easy as sending a text message. This simplicity has helped them reach users that traditional banking apps struggle to attract.

Rewards and cashback programs have also boosted downloads. Users earn small amounts for referring friends, completing transactions, or using certain features. These incentives add up and keep people engaged with the apps.

Snapchat

Snapchat experienced a quiet resurgence among young Nigerians this year. It was popular years ago, declined as Instagram copied its features, and is now growing again.

The My AI feature, which integrates ChatGPT into Snapchat, has been a major draw. Young Nigerians are using it to ask questions, get homework help, and experiment with AI without downloading a separate app. The fact that it lives inside an app they already use for socializing makes it accessible.

Snapchat’s filters and lenses remain popular. They are more creative and fun than what competitors offer. Group chats on Snapchat feel more private and less permanent than WhatsApp, which appeals to younger users who value ephemeral communication.

Snap Map, which lets you see where friends are on a map, has become popular among Nigerian university students as a way to coordinate meetups and see where social activity is happening on campus.

ChatGPT and Poe

AI apps have seen significant download growth in Nigeria. ChatGPT leads the category, with many Nigerians installing the official app after using the web version for months.

The use cases are broad. Students use it for learning and assignments. Professionals use it for drafting emails, reports, and proposals. Creators use it for content ideas and captions. The app has become a general-purpose tool that cuts across demographics.

Poe by Quora is the second most downloaded AI app. It allows users to access multiple AI models in one app including ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The free tier is generous and the mobile experience is smooth. Nigerians with lower-end phones appreciate that Poe runs well on devices with limited RAM.

AI image generators like Bing Image Creator have also gained traction, though they are primarily used through mobile browsers rather than dedicated apps.

CapCut

CapCut has become essential for anyone creating short-form video content. The app is free, powerful, and integrates directly with TikTok.

Nigerian creators use CapCut to edit videos for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. The auto-caption feature alone saves hours of manual work. Templates allow beginners to create professional-looking edits without learning complex editing skills.

Small businesses use CapCut to create promotional videos. Students use it for academic presentations. Churches use it to edit sermon clips. The app has crossed over from being a creator tool to being a general-purpose video editor for Nigerians.

CapCut’s growth mirrors TikTok’s growth. Wherever short-form video thrives, CapCut follows. In Nigeria, short-form video is thriving.

Telegram

Telegram continues to grow steadily in Nigeria, particularly among communities that value privacy and large group capabilities.

News communities on Telegram have grown significantly. People join channels that deliver breaking news, job alerts, scholarship opportunities, and investment tips directly to their phones. The ability to have thousands of members in a single group or unlimited subscribers on a channel makes Telegram ideal for mass communication.

Crypto and investment communities are particularly active on Telegram. The platform’s reputation for stronger privacy protections attracts discussions about sensitive financial topics.

The download speeds for files and media on Telegram are faster than WhatsApp in many cases. This has made it popular for sharing large files like movies, software, and academic materials.

Bolt and Uber

Ride-hailing apps remain essential for urban Nigerians. Bolt currently leads in downloads and active usage, though Uber maintains a strong presence.

Bolt’s advantage is pricing. Rides are generally cheaper than Uber for comparable distances. The app also offers food delivery in major cities through Bolt Food, which increases its utility and keeps the app on people’s phones.

Both apps are used daily by Nigerians who commute to work, attend events, or need reliable transportation at odd hours. The competition between them benefits users through occasional promotions and discounts.

Google Gemini

Google’s AI assistant has seen increased downloads as Google pushes it to Android users. Many Nigerians encountered Gemini through updates to the Google app and subsequently downloaded the standalone version.

Gemini’s integration with other Google services makes it useful. It can search Gmail, interact with Google Docs, and provide information with the context of your Google account. For Nigerians deeply embedded in the Google ecosystem, this integration is valuable.

The voice interaction features are improving and appeal to users who prefer speaking to typing. Voice search and voice commands have always been popular in Nigeria and Gemini enhances this experience.

Apps That Declined This Year

Instagram downloads have declined among Nigerian users, reflecting the broader shift away from the platform discussed in a previous post. People still use it but fewer are installing it for the first time.

Traditional banking apps are losing ground to fintech alternatives. The clunky interfaces and frequent downtime of some traditional bank apps push users toward Opay, PalmPay, and other mobile-first financial services.

Betting apps remain widely used but growth has slowed. Regulatory pressure and economic constraints have cooled what was once a rapidly expanding category.

What These Downloads Tell Us

The apps Nigerians are downloading reflect practical needs more than hype. Communication, money management, transportation, and entertainment dominate. AI tools have entered the mainstream. Video creation tools are essential. Fintech continues to reshape how Nigerians interact with money.

The trend is toward apps that serve multiple purposes. An app that only does one thing struggles unless it does that thing exceptionally well. Platforms that combine communication, commerce, and content are winning the most downloads and the most daily active users.

If you are a creator or business owner in Nigeria, understanding where attention is flowing helps you decide where to invest your content and marketing efforts. The apps on this list are where Nigerians are spending their digital lives right now. Meet them there.

Nigerians download a lot of apps.
